Ruinart Blanc Singulier Edition 20 is a 100% Chardonnay cuvée, composed primarily of about ten crus from across the Champagne region. These include the Montagne de Reims (Sillery, Cernay-lès-Reims), the Coteaux d’Epernay (Epernay and Monthelon), the Côte des Blancs (Bergères-lès-Vertus), the Petit Morin Valley (Villevenard), the Sézannais region (Bethon, Montgenost), and the Aube region (Les Riceys, Montgueux).
The third year of the 2018, 2019, 2020 trilogy, this vintage stands out for its contrasting weather conditions in Champagne. A particularly mild winter was followed by an exceptionally sunny spring, promoting rapid vine growth.
The summer, marked by record-breaking drought and temperatures exceeding 40°C, put the vineyards under water stress and caused sunscald. In this context, the harvest was early, beginning as early as August.
Made from a 100% Chardonnay blend, the 2020 base wines reveal a distinctive aromatic profile. This vintage once again highlights the impact of climate change in Champagne and demonstrates the effects of global warming on Champagne wines.
The wine has a deep, luminous golden yellow color, with silvery-green highlights.
The bouquet is intense and rich. It reveals aromas of juicy, sweet white fruits reminiscent of nectarine and Nashi pear. The fragrant and fresh notes of yellow citrus fruits bring a tangy sensation, underscored by scents of candied angelica and white flowers (musky white rose), with hints of honeyed notes (honeysuckle). These blend harmoniously with fruity spice aromas such as saffron, where a smoky note also emerges.
The attack is lively and crisp, giving way to a rich, enveloping palate where the aromas of summer yellow fruits come through in full force. The sensation of volume lends breadth to the aromas. Their intense expression is supported by a firm structure that carries the wine’s length, with lingering notes of yellow peach and fruity spices (nutmeg, saffron, paprika). The sap-like, delicately aniseed-tinged notes that follow leave a delicate, fresh almond bitterness on the finish.
Umami, often referred to as the fifth taste, is characterized by a sensation that is both enveloping and mouth-watering, prolonging the flavor on the palate. In Ruinart champagnes, it arises in particular from aging on the lees, which lends the wine greater depth and complexity.
Ruinart Blanc Singulier offers a refined expression of this flavor, with notes of white fruit, a hint of smokiness, and nuances of wild herbs. On the palate, its generous texture and mouth-watering character prolong the pleasure and pave the way for pairings that are both harmonious and contrasting.
