Adapting to the ever-changing natural environment, Ruinart has perfected its know-how and created a new expression of chardonnay. Ruinart Blanc Singulier embodies the distinctiveness of each year's wines, reflecting the variations in climate and the essence of that specific vintage.
In response to the evolving temperatures in Champagne, the shortened vine cycle, and the accelerated maturation process, chardonnay shows different aromatic profiles with increased fruitiness and spiciness. These climate-exposed chardonnays exhibit a harmonious balance between aromatic families, intensified expression, and a texture characterised by roundness and power.
To reveal these exceptional aromatic expressions while upholding the Ruinart signature style, the cellar master and the team have adapted their expertise. Ruinart Blanc Singulier is the result of an innovative oenological approach, blending 80% of base wines from a specific year with 20% from a perpetual reserve crafted exclusively for this cuvée. A new blend that preserves Ruinart's distinctive aromatic freshness for a blanc de blancs that is either lightly dosed or not dosed at all, depending on the edition of the cuvée.
This new 100% chardonnay cuvée is presented as a collection whose editions reflect the years marked by an atypical climate. The Edition 18 presents notes of fleshy white and yellow fruits and candied yellow citrus fruits, honeyed floral notes, serene aromatic herbs and smoky spices.
Ruinart Blanc Singulier Edition 18 is composed of 100% chardonnay from 80% of wines from the harvest in 2018 and 20% of reserve wines. It is made mainly from about twenty vintages, from the Côte des Blancs but also from the Montagne de Reims, the Coteaux d'Epernay and Sézannais.
Ruinart Blanc Singulier is presented as a collection of singular Editions, that will succeed one another at the rhythm of the years marked by an atypical climate.
This Edition stands as a testimony to the climatic variations encountered by our vines throughout the year 2018. Benefiting from a warm and sun-drenched season, the vine's vegetative cycle accelerated significantly, leading to an early and bountiful harvest commencing in August. These distinctive weather conditions brought forth diverse aromatic profiles.
2018 was a particularly warm year in the Champagne region with an average temperature of 12.8°C, 1.1°C higher than the 10-year average. The level of sunshine reached a record this year in Champagne with 2,169 hours of sunshine (+19% compared to the ten-year average) and surpassed that of the scorching year 2003, while rainfall decreased by 7% with 659 mm of rain compared to the ten-year average of 706 mm.
The wine’s colour is a clear, bright golden yellow with subtle green highlights.
The aromatic profile reveals juicy and sweet fruit notes reminiscent of white peach, mirabelle plum, and exotic fruits. Accompanying these fruity aromas are hints of yellow citrus fruits with candied peel, adding a touch of brightness. Delicate floral scents, particularly honeysuckle, lend a honeyed and inviting character. Subtle hints of aromatic herbs like pine, sage, and rosemary contribute to the aromatic complexity. As the scent evolves, gentle undertones of blond sugar, vanilla, and subtle brioche-like pastry notes emerge, complemented by a delicate touch of fresh almonds.
The initial taste sensation is vibrant and lively, swiftly transitioning into a rounded and robust texture. This remarkable mouthfeel imparts a unique sense of expansiveness to the wine. It conveys a delightful impression of substance, offering flavors of ripe peach, pear, and hints of candied lemon, with the subtle presence of their velvety skins. The wine's impressive length is accompanied by enticing spicy notes, culminating in a harmonious finish of delicate vanilla nuances.
Maison Ruinart recommends serving its champagne in a tulip glass, or a white wine glass with an opening wide enough to allow the expression of the aromatic complexity and the evolution of the bubbles.
The cellar master's first laboratory test of the new chardonnay blend is the 17th edition of the future Ruinart Blanc Singulier cuvée. It will mark the starting point of a dedicated reserve. This edition is available exclusively for tasting and purchase at the Ruinart House in Reims.
